My Mental Health

After experiencing a dark and lonely area of my life, with depression on and off, in the last 15 yrs I have found certain things that help make the struggle easier, or bring joy to my life, along with prayer. Sometimes it is a chemical imbalance in the body, sometimes it is a deep feeling of loneliness and despair, and sometimes our beliefs that we learned can cause us to feel worthless. Depends on how they were twisted.
Sometimes I had thoughts that I was alone and nobody understood what I was feeling. Sometimes I felt "what's the point of living" "nobody cares" "I might as well die" "I hate myself". If you are having these thoughts first STOP, and take a deep breath. Get a glass of water to nourish yourself, and if you can, find something that smells lovely and breath deeply in. Like an apple or orange or your deodorant if that's all you have.  Allow your brain to trigger an uplifting memory. If you know God then talk to Him and ask Him to fill you with His light. Tell Him you are sorry for straying away from Him and whatever else is on your heart. If you don't know God and want to, just reach out and say

"Hey God, it's me________ I am sorry for not reaching out to you sooner, I am also sorry for _____ please forgive me. Help me to live for you".

You may not realize this, but you are alive today because you have a purpose. Your life is so important and has so much value. But there is an enemy, who goes by many names, and he want to destroy your life. He tricks people everyday because he hates God and he hates everything that God has created - especially you and I.
When you choose to follow Jesus you might say you are now a "Christian". You will soon discover that there are many people who use this identity because they had Christian parents, or because of where they were born, or just because they go you church. Just because you go to a Toronto Maple Leafs game doesn't mean you are a Leaf's fan. You might be a fan of the opposing team. Or you might not know anything about hockey at all and just like to be with friends, or you like the food, or something else. I have been in many different church denominations. There are those who are on opposing sides in all churches. It really sucks, but that's just how it is. We live in a world that wants justice but don't want to live justly
Matthew 7:13-14 says    “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.   But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."
Nobody told me when I chose to follow Jesus that this narrow road was also at church. When I was a teen I went to this large church with my parents. A well known denomination around the world. One of the youth brought a friend to church who had never been to church. She was quickly approached by one of the leaders' very rebellious sons. They started dating. Then one service they skipped the service and ended up having sex on the church lawn. I felt so bad for the girl. God was drawing her to Himself but she got tricked by the enemy. Not long after I was late walking into church and a much older leader pulled me aside to his office. He told me I was an embarrassment to the church and that I didn't have a good future. What he didn't know was that one of the men in the church was following me and passing me notes and blowing on the back of my neck in church whispering things to me while his wife was singing in the choir. I was 14yrs old. I finally had to tell my school counsellor when he showed up waiting for me outside. I have been hurt many times by "Christians". Jesus said in John 13:34-35  "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.
I have been hurt by many many "Christians", but not many, were disciples. A true disciple that loves the Lord will follow Christ's command to "love one another".  If you are feeling alone at church and hurt by "Christians", know that Jesus was also hurt by these people, who were also called "the Pharisees".  They accused Jesus of being a glutton, a drunkard, and demon possessed.  If people can find fault with Jesus then for sure they can find fault with me! But it still hurts. What you can do is have hope knowing that Jesus sees and cares about you very much. You can ask for help. Jesus longs to help you. And write it down. I keep a prayer journal of all the prayers and mark when they get answered. It helps me to rejoice and come away from depression when I read answered prayers. It is proof that He listens.
